Explore on foot, from village to village, as you head from the banks of the Dordogne, along the pretty Ouysse Valley, to the ancient hanging village of Rocamadour
This pretty village has been the destination of pilgrims since the 12th century and a real highlight.
Itinerary and Highlights
- Day 1 Arrive Creysse with its interesting old church and ruined castle.
- Day 2 Creysse to Pech de Raysse (15km, 5.5hrs or 9km, 3hrs)
Transfer to the pretty riverside village of Meyronne. There's 2 walks to choose from: a longer walk via the attractive hamlets of Le Limon and Mayrinhac le Francal or a shorter option through woodland and farmland across the panoramic Pech del Raysse. - Day 3 Lacave (up to 24km, 4-8hrs)
Visit the village’s impressive caves with their underground lakes, stalactites and stalagmites (pay locally), stroll to the château overlooking the confluence of the Dordogne and the Ouysse, then spend the afternoon relaxing by the hotel pool. An optional walk crosses the river and leads up through woodland to the top of the riverside cliff on for views of the valley from various viewpoints. - Day 4 Lacave to Calès (10km, 3.5hrs)
Head south along the idyllic Ouysse Valley via a fortified 14thC working mill then up through woodland across fields to Calès. - Day 5 Treyne (13km, 5.5hrs)
Circuit walk through oak woods and the sparse vegetarian of the limestone plateau to the splendid private châteaux of Le Bastit and Treyne on the banks of the Dordogne. - Day 6 Rocamadour (13km, 3.5hrs)
Rejoin the River Ouysse and follow it eastwards, passing several mill ponds on your way to the pilgrims’ centre of Rocamadour and uphill to your destination, Hospitalet. - Day 7 Grottes des Merveilles near Hospitalet (10km, 3hrs)
Explore the village of Rocamadour, crowned by a castle offering a fantastic panorama. Visit the Grottes des Merveilles near Hospitalet, where the various prehistoric cave paintings have been discovered. - Day 8 Walking holiday arrangements end.
